About the LHO

There are 12 Public Health Observatories (PHOs) working across the five nations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. We produce information, data and intelligence on people's health and health care for practitioners, policy makers and the wider community. Our expertise lies in turning information and data into meaningful health intelligence.

The network of nine Public Health Observatories in England are continuing to work together in collaboration on an agreed national work plan. The Association of Public Health Observatories has been formally dissolved but the website (www.apho.org.uk) will be maintained during this period of transition until the new public health system for England is more fully in place.

The map below shows the configuration of the PHOs. Each of the English regional PHOs share the same geographic boundary as the former Government Office of that region.

The LHO produces information, data and intelligence on the health and health care of the 7.8 million people who live in London. We provide up-to-date information for health practitioners, policy-makers and researchers to assist with commissioning and policy decisions. LHO also runs training programmes in health intelligence training and capacity-building programmes for health practitioners.

In addition to providing intelligence for its London stakeholders, the LHO also has a national lead role among the Public Health Observatories on health inequalities, ethnicity and tobacco. It is the lead Observatory for NICE, the NHS Confederation and the Centre for Public Scrutiny. In its national lead roles, the LHO works closely with the Department of Health and the Information Centre for Health and Social Care as well as the Care Quality Commission.

The table below summarises the lead roles of each PHO as at December 2011
