Information management
Working with information from many different sources is at the heart of the work of the LHO. For this reason, it
takes Information Management very seriously. The LHO needs to ensure that the way it works with information is always
compliant with legal directives and other guidelines such as those stipulated by National Statistics or the NHS. For
example, any work carried out on data that contains personal identifiers must comply with the Data Protection Act.
As a result, the LHO has produced documents which list Information Management Principles that the organisation
adheres to when working with any information. In addition, it lists specific legal and other guidelines that affect
the way the organisation works with specific data sets. This has been informed by the NHS guidelines also listed below.
In addition, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, all public authorities have a legal duty to adopt and
maintain a publication scheme, which is a guide to all information routinely published by that authority. The London
Health Observatory is not a public authority in its own right. Formerly hosted by NHS London, the LHO joined Commissioning Support for London (CSL) in April 2009.
