Deaths Data
Death registration is a service carried out by the Local Registration Service in partnership with the General Register
Office (GRO) in Southport, which is part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Information collected at death
registration includes:
- Name and address of deceased
- Date of birth
- Occupation
- Cause of death
- Place of death
- Place of birth

publications from the ONS - DH1 - Annual review of the Registrar General on deaths in England and Wales, DH2 - Deaths
by cause, DH3 - Childhood infant and perinatal mortality, DH4 - Injury and poisoning.
Health Statistics Quarterly -
The Health Statistics Quarterly (HSQ) publication covers health information. It is a sister publication to Population Trends.
It contains commentary on the latest findings, topical articles on relevant subjects illustrated with colour charts and
diagrams, regularly updated statistical tables and graphs, showing trends and the latest quarterly information: on deaths,
childhood mortality, cancer survival, abortions, congenital anomalies, morbidity etc
Vital
statistics summaries - Data are available from ONS (on disk) separately for local authority area. These may be available
for primary care trusts in the future.
Births and deaths summary data (DVS1) - Annual summary figures for local authorities in England & Wales on populations,
births, deaths, infant deaths. Includes comparative numbers and rates for the region and England & Wales.
Mortality
data by cause (DVS3) - Information for each local authority in England & Wales on numbers of deaths from 120 causes, by
sex and age for under 1 year, 1-4 years, 5 year age groups up to 84 and 85+.
Births
and deaths by wards (DVS4) - Information by ward for each local authority on total numbers of live births, stillbirths
and deaths by sex. Also deaths under 28 days, under one year and at ages 1-4 years, 5-14 years, 15-24 years etc to 85+.
Deaths
by selected causes by wards (DVS4D) - Information by ward for each local authority on deaths (excluding deaths under 28
days) by sex for 12 selected causes of death:
- All malignant neoplasms (140-208)
- Diseases of circulatory system (390-459)
- Malignant neoplasm of stomach (151)
- Ischaemic heart disease (410-414)
- Malignant neoplasm of trachea, bronchus & lung (162)
- Cerebrovascular disease (430-438)
- Malignant neoplasm of female breast (174)
- Diseases of respiratory system (460-519)
- Malignant neoplasm of prostate (185)
- Pneumonia (480-186)
- Diabetes mellitus (250)
- Motor vehicle traffic accidents (E810-E819)
Infant mortality data (DVS5) - Information for each local authority in England & Wales on live births, stillbirths and
babies dying under the ages of 7 days, 28 days and one year by sex of the baby; rates for infant mortality (deaths under 1
year), stillbirths, perinatal mortality (deaths under 7 days), early neonatal mortality (deaths between 7 days and one month),
neonatal mortality (deaths below one month) and post-neonatal mortality (deaths between one month and one year); birthweight
for live births and stillbirths and weeks of gestation for stillbirths.
Public
Health Mortality File (PHMF) - Available to PCTs only from ONS at cost on application. A database consisting of weekly
or monthly individual records giving details of all deaths in a Primary Care Trust, including usual residents who have died
elsewhere. Uses include audit and screening programmes, confidential enquiries and register checking.
