Estimating Future Births

Future births in London

In 2006 a review by Healthcare for London, A Framework for action, detailed how London’s healthcare needs to change over the next ten years in order to achieve improvements, particularly in reducing inequalities in health outcomes and the quality and safety of patient care. One of the priorities addressed was maternity care and care of the newborn.

NHS London commissioned the London Health Observatory (LHO) to conduct a study of recent births and possible future births in London to assist in planning future maternity service provision. The London Health Observatory has produced a report summarising this and further detailed work for London’s PCTs to assess the potential impact on changes in births by country of birth of the mother at London and PCT levels. The report also present options for estimating future births over the short term.

An executive summary and a full technical report are available below.

GLA Projections of births by age and ethnicity of mother

Demographic projections of the number of births in London at borough level are produced annually by the Greater London Authority (GLA). The outputs have been configured by the London Health Observatory in the form of an Excel-based tool to present the projected births by age and ethnicity of mother in the form of charts and tables. This tool was commissioned by NHS London and supplements the above report Estimating Future Births in the Capital: A Discussion Document. The tool below is available to London NHS organisations only.
