Haemoglobinopathy

Care pathways for antenatal & neonatal haemoglobinopathy screening in London

Universal neonatal and antenatal haemoglobinopathy screening will be implemented in London, by mid 2003 and 2004 respectively, in accordance with the NHS Plan. The NHS Haemoglobinpathy Screening Programme, together with London Health Observatory, has undertaken a review of the care pathways in London for both antenatal and neonatal haemoglobinopathy screening. The study highlights the diversity of service provision and delivery in London and has identified gaps at all levels of the screening and follow-up process. This work aims to inform Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities and the Screening Programme of the areas necessary for resource allocation in order best implement the programmes.
