- Statistics on smoking, England 2010.
In England in 2008, 21% of adults reported smoking. This figure remains unchanged from 2007. Although more men smoke than women (21% for men and 20% for women), the difference in prevalence is lower. Five per cent of all hospital admissions for those aged 35 and over were for smoking attributable causes. In 2009, 18% of all deaths for those aged 35 and over were attributable to smoking.

- Smokefree England: compliance to June 2010
There was little regional variation in premises / vehicles compliant with no smoking, according to figures from Smokefree England. London’s premises / vehicles were 98.1% compliant with no smoking and 89.6% compliant with signage in the first three years since the smokefree legislation. However, for vehicles inspected during the six months from January – June 2010, London and Yorkshire & Humber were the two regions with 100% compliance for both no smoking and signage.

- Feleke R, De Ponte P, Fitzpatrick J, Jacobson B. Heartsavers: cost savings from a reduction of emergency admissions for myocardial infarction following smokefree legislation in England. London: London Health Observatory
Evidence shows that the smoking ban has reduced emergency admissions for heart attacks in England. Based on this evidence, the LHO has modelled the acute cost-savings for each PCT in England as a result of the first year of the smoking ban. The total is estimated to be £8.4m in the first year following the introduction of the legislation.

- Wardle H, Pickup D, Lee L. et al The impact of picture health warnings on cigarette packets. London: National Centre for Social Research
Researchers from the Public Health Research Consortium at York University found no variation in cigarette consumption or increases in behavioural responses following the introduction of picture health warnings in October 2008. However, there was an increased emotional response with both young people and adults reporting that the warnings made smoking seem less attractive. Awareness of conditions such as oral cancer and gum disease was significantly higher post-implementation of the pictures.
