Life Expectancy Spearhead Tool
Based on mortality data for 2006-08, this tool contains information for Spearhead local authorities to understand the drivers of local low life expectancy.
It can support commissioning and service development decisions to narrow local gaps in life expectancy between each Spearhead area with England as a whole.
It shows the impact of cost effective interventions on local life expectancy and All Age All Cause Mortality to support achievement of Vital Signs plans and
Local Area Agreements.
To access the tool, first select a Spearhead area from the dropdown menu below, before entering one of the three elements of the tool by clicking one of the
yellow buttons. It may take a few seconds for your selected area to load. Clicking a yellow button before it has fully loaded will cancel the selection. If you

Click here to see the current life expectancy in each Spearhead area and the gap with England as a whole. The life expectancy gap for the Spearhead Group as a whole is also included. Spearheads are listed in alphabetical order but your selection will be highlighted at the top. This screen also shows whether the selected Spearhead is on or off track to meet the national health inequality target.
Use the dropdown menus from this screen to select tables which show the life expectancy gap between each Spearhead area and England, broken down by either cause of death or age group. A breakdown is also provided for the Spearhead group as a whole. Charts are available which summarise these breakdowns.
From this screen the impact of modelling five evidence-based interventions on life expectancy in a Spearhead area can be assessed. Current information is provided for each area as a guide for users.
