Public Health England has been established to protect and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing and to reduce inequalities. It will lead to the development of a 21 Century health and wellbeing service, supporting local authorities and the NHS to deliver the greatest possible improvements in public health. It came into being in April 2013.Historical information about the LHO

There were 12 Public Health Observatories (PHOs) working across the five nations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. We produce information, data and intelligence on people’s health and health care for practitioners, policymakers and the wider community. Our expertise lay in turning information and data into meaningful health intelligence and we will be continuing to do this within Public Health England.

The network of nine Public Health Observatories in England worked together in collaboration on an agreed national work plan. The Association of Public Health Observatories was formally dissolved in March 2010 but the website is still accessible until the sites are fully integrated with Public Health England.

The LHO produced information, data and intelligence on the health and health care of the 7.8 million people who live in London. We provided up-to-date information for health practitioners, policy-makers and researchers to assist with commissioning and policy decisions. LHO also ran training programmes in health intelligence training and capacity-building programmes for health practitioners.

In addition to providing intelligence for its London stakeholders, the LHO also had a national leadership role among the Public Health Observatories on health inequalities, ethnicity and tobacco. It was the lead Observatory for NICE, the NHS Confederation and the Centre for Public Scrutiny. In its national leadership roles, the LHO worked closely with the Department of Health and the Information Centre for Health and Social Care as well as the Care Quality Commission.
